Wairarapa Family Photographer - April & Family April had just recently moved over to the Wairarapa from Wellington and wanted some updated family photographs, but also to celebrate their new adventure as a family. So I thought what better place than to head down to one my favorite local summer spots. Its such a gorgeous wee camping area with a beautiful river & swimming hole, just as the river exits the ranges. The cool thing was these guys hadn't been there before so it was awesome to introduce them to some of Featherston's best assets. :) I reckon there might be few trips down here once summer returns!
Wairarapa Newborn Photographer - Meet Jett! It the second time I have photographed this lovely family. Little Mr Fox now has a new brother. Its taken a little getting used to but I think they will firm friends in no time! Gorgeous Jett is the spitting image of his big brother as a baby - many with a touch less hair! Jett's mum brought in a beautiful hand knitted blanket for him to be photographed on. It was so warm and snuggly - perfect for these winter nights! Wellington Family Photographer - Queensberry Album This family came to see me with their goal being to capture the characters of their children at this age and also the relationships between them all. To tell their story we opted to take a few images in the studio and then head outside for a chance to play around and have some fun. Its hard to pick a single frame from this shoot for the wall, and sessions like this lend themselves to being presented as a story told through an album. We put together this gorgeous Queensberry album to document this special time in their lives, which I know these guys will cherish for many years to come.

NZIPP Iris Awards 2017 After entering the NZIPP Iris Awards last year, for the first time again in years I was a little nervous entering again! I had set myself a target, so it was a little scarier then last year when I was just happy to get any award! The New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography has a honors system, where you work your way up over the years depending on how many points you have in total and how many you earned within a 4 year period through the awards. Because I have been a bit sporadic with my entries over the years, I had never achieved the required points within the timeframe to work my way up. So, after last year gaining 6 bronzes, I knew I need at least four more bronzes to get me the Associate level. And if I dared to dream big, I may even get something more than a bronze to get up to another level....... Well the first day rolled around and I had entered two images into two categories that I had never entered before - Documentary and Illustrative. I was particularly nervous about these prints as were both personal work (self-commissioned, non client work) and different from what I usually do. First up was my Doco image. This shot meant a lot to me as it was an image of my children and some of their friends after a game of rugby. I love this image because it tells you so much about this social group, how they interact, the personalities and also the story that is being told can be seen reflected everywhere through life. So my first print came up, butterflies in [...]

NZIPP Iris Awards 2016 It had been quite a while since I had entered the NZIPP Iris Awards for one reason or another. So this year I decided to give it a go. I have to admit I was pretty nervous as it is not easy getting an award at Iris and it had been such a long time...... Oh well I figured why not! And then spent weeks agonising over what to enter, getting the prints right and all the other things that things that you worry about! The thing is although it takes a lot of time, a lot of mental energy and also a very patient and supportive family (thanks Glen for listening to me going on about it for weeks!), I always learn so much about my work by going through the process. It always help to lift it up a notch. So even if I came away with nothing the learning process itself in invaluable. The judging takes place anonymously over 3 days in an open judging room, so you can sit and watch whilst your work is being judged. I decided to dedicate three days to making the trip over to Wellington to watch as its is always such a valuable source of learning. Its also incredibly nerve-wrecking - I had forgotten how much! By the time my first print came up I had already had two coffees - well that was a mistake! My heart was going ten to the dozen! My first print was in the Landscape category which is notoriously tough - the category is filled with entries from all the big names in NZ Landscape photography. I have to admit, I did wonder what on earth [...]
